I Will: Isaiah 14:12-14

Authored by Abraham Mejia

12  “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! 13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

When it comes to the Bible and interpreting its passages there’s many interpretations one can use. We will discuss three different interpretations, Literal, Exchatological, and Typological interpretations.

Literal Interpretation:

This explanation is simple, you understand it as it’s literally written without adding extra context or meaning. You could almost describe it as reading a recipe and following it. In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible it mentions the name Lucifer. There’s debate on whether this is a name or a title. Literal interpretation would say Lucifer is the King of Babylon and how he has fallen from Heaven.

Eschatological interpretation:

Eschatology means what will happen in the end times. People who hold an Eschatological view of this verse might interpret it as Isaiah talking about Israel’s long awaited enemy, the Antichrist. Many believe this talks about how the Antichrist will fall and be banished to Hell.

Typological Interpretation:

Typology means symbolism. But it’s a special kind of symbolism. This type of symbolism points to other points in Scripture, regardless if it’s prophetic or not.

My belief on the passage is typological and that’s what I’ll be focusing on. In this verse we get a glimpse of Lucifer’s pride and why he got kicked out of Heaven. Lucifer says five times “I Will”. He says ‘…I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

In the Bible numbers can be taken literally or symbolically. Here are some examples of numbers being used symbolically. God created mankind on the sixth day. In the Bible, the number 6 means man in Hebrew. Six can also mean the number of man’s sin. Later in Revelation we see the number “666”. Three means complete and points to the Trinity. You can imagine why Lucifer would use “666”. For it goes against God, repeating 6 three times.

Let’s do another example shall we? The most known number definition is “7.” Seven similar to 3 means completion but it also means perfection. Perfect completion. There’s seven days of creation and seven spirits of God. The book of Revelation has more sevens. There are seven churches, seven sealed scrolls, seven trumpets, and seven bowls of wrath. We also even have instances of 777, seven appearing three times. This would mean perfect and complete. In the book of Joshua, we have seven priests marching around Jericho on the seventh day (The Sabbath). They march around seven times, each time blowing a trumpet.

Now’s let’s return to the verse in Isaiah shall we? Lucifer says five times, I will. What is so significant about the number 5? Well in the Bible, the number 5 means grace. What exactly is grace? Grace is an undeserved favor. Lucifer proclaims five separate times that he will ascend into Heaven and make himself like God. What he is proclaiming is false grace.

Everything the enemy does is the exact opposite and a direct distortion of what our Heavenly Father does. Whether it’s Lucifer proclaiming false grace and waiting to be like God or turning 777 into his own version 666. There is nothing more Lucifer wants than to separate us from God and create his own false narrative in doing so.
