GLORIFYING GOD

Authored by Cole Speer

Day 1:

Introduction to the Series:

All Scripture is inspired by God (II Tim. 3:16). Therefore, no passage in the Bible is really any more or less important than the others. The Bible is to be taken as a whole. The sum of God’s Word is greater than its parts. However, certain words or phrases in particular verses catch our eye because of the weight they carry. Words that are not “more inspired” but emphasize a tremendous truth that can seriously alter our perspective on life itself. Consider the following verses as examples:
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (I Cor. 15:3-4).”
Notice the phrase “of first importance.” This verse is summarizing the gospel (good news). Of all the things the Apostle Paul could have said, he says the first and foremost principle to know and understand is the gospel. That should grab us!

Another example is where Jesus says, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment (Matt. 22:37-38).”
The key word here is “foremost.” In a general sense this means, “first in place, rank and order.” So, nothing in life is more important than loving God with our entire being.

One final example is found in I Corinthians chapter 10. “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (I Cor. 10:31).”
Whatever you do? Even the most mundane tasks are to be done in such a way that they glorify God? Is that the point? Indeed it is!

This is where we begin our time together. For the next several studies, I want to unpack several practical ways we can glorify God in our everyday lives. Our heavenly Father does not just give us this command and walk away. He reveals to us in His Word some specific ways to magnify His name to “get us started” in the right direction. What is the right direction? Vertical.

“Make me to know your ways, oh LORD (Ps. 25:4).”
